ENVIRONMENTAL DATA...
VIA
Environmental Protection Program:
We
at VIA strive to be more planet conscious with respect
to how we work and deliver
on our commitment to our customers, and ensure minimum
manufacturing impact on
our natural environment.
As a company VIA believes that it is our responsibility
to implement programs and
practices that support the protection of the environment.
Our employees embrace the
programs we have put in place and make sure that they
are an intrinsic part of our day
to-day operations.
1.
Daily operations: VIA have set an internal
limit on kilowatt usage. A lower
usage level has been achieved with conservation of machine
motors from single-
phase motors to multiple-phase motors, along with other
conservation practices,
such as installation of timers on heating systems. The
VIA plant itself has
multiple natural light enhancing opportunities, from
front office wide pane
windows, sky lights and 18bay windows on the front of
the building.
2. Facility Planning: VIA’s very
deliberate space efficiency with respect to storage
of inventory, processing, and assembly, minimizes waste
of resources for
heating, lighting and air conditioning.
3. Packaging: Ongoing commitment to
improving packaging methods is one very
important way which VIA reduces its impact on the environment.
VIA continues
to use cardboard to ship all products. The cardboard
used is made from 65%
recycled materials – the highest percentage VIA
can use and achieve the
durability required for cartons. Cardboard is also used
exclusively in our plants
for materials handling purposes. VIA diverted over 105
tons of recyclable
materials from land fills last year alone. This recycling
effort leads to the
recognition and award of outstanding achievement in
recycling presented by TMS
Recycling (the Reno based waste management agency).
4. Materials used: State of the art
technology ensures minimum waste of
materials used in the upholstery process. All VIA in-stock
Maharam fabrics are
78% post-Industrial Recycled Polyester, 15% Polyester,
and 7% Nylon. The vast
majority of VIA’s components are products of service
and can be fully recycled as
such. See more detail under ‘Construction Specifications’.
5. Printed Materials: Where possible
we use recycled paper on our brochures and
internal paperwork. All discarded paper used in the
office and plant is recycled
through a local recycling program. This program includes
recycling of glass
bottles, aluminum cans and newsprint.
6. Product Durability: Perhaps the
best thing VIA can do for the environment is to
build products to last. VIA has always had a reputation
for exceptionally made
durable furniture, which goes back to the strength of
our construction methods,
and the durability of our raw materials, our unique
finishing materials. See more
information on ‘VIA Warranty’.

Foam Specifications:
Every VIA foam cushion is injection molded Cold Cured
and is cast in a contoured mold
specifically designed by VIA. This ensures the same
consistent shape, density,
resistance and quality every time. This process eliminates
waste as each mold is
poured to VIA’s exact specifications no more and
no less.
In order to evaluate the resistance of foam, we use
a “Resistance Factor” or “Energy
Absorbing” qualities. Good foam must provide resistance
in direct proportion to the
amount of pressure applied. In other words; for every
pound of pressure applied, the
foam must also provide a pound of resistive pressure.
The result is that the foam will
not “bottom out”.
The measurement of density or volume weight will give
another indication of the
foams ability to resist weight. This unit of measurement
does not necessarily translate
into hardness but rather the feel you receive when you
sit on the foam.
Foam is comprised of a group of cells. The higher numbers
of cells that are packed into
a given area create a more dense area. As a result a
greater weight is also created.
Foam with a higher density is best suited for office
ergonomic seating. Because the
foam is injected into a mold we are able to control
the density throughout any portion of
the cushion. Our foam is stronger and offers more density
in the center of the seat pan
and lighter around the edges so it does not cut off
circulation in the body.
Density volume weight is measured in pounds of cubic
foot (or kilos per cubic
meter (kg/m3)). Via foam has the average density or
volume of 3 pounds per
cubic foot (48 kg/m3). Standard flat foam has a single
volume weight between
1.9 and 2.25 pounds per cubic foot (30 to 40 kg/m3).
Maintenance and Repair of Product:
VIA product is built with the highest quality components
available. VIA product is
engineered in order to be completely modular i.e. all
components attach to the main
cushion configuration (e.g. your choice of seat and
back cushion) by metal to metal
connectors. Each seat size is engineered to receive
multiple controls and arm options
(see afore mentioned) and can be installed at time of
order or while in service very
easily. In addition, sliding seat option can be added
while chair is in service. Very
simple, Philips screw driver required.
VIA Warranty
• All foam cushions, structural components and
non moving parts are warranted for
life (the only seating manufacturer with lifetime warranty
on foam).
• Adjustable arms, pneumatic cylinders and casters
are warranted for ten years.
• Seating mechanisms (i.e. adjustable controls)
and stack chairs (Cali, Camden)
are warranted for six years.
• VIA’s in-stock fabrics and leathers are
warranted against defects for two years.
Construction
Specifications:
VIA
uses a minimum of 5 layers of ply wood platforms used
in task seating and up to 14
layers in executive seating (far above industry standards).
These are imported from
Italy and as such, have no added Formaldehyde. As these
platforms are made from
a natural wood product, Formaldehyde is a naturally
occurring element of wood –
therefore it is misleading for VIA (or any manufacturer)
to state that any compressed
wood products are Formaldehyde free. European manufacturing
standards dictate
that there cannot be any Formaldehyde added to compressed
wood products.
General Construction:
Foam: (See more information under ‘VIA
Foam Specifications)
• Cold Cured Foam - No additional
energy required to heat pouring process.
• Single Mold - No waste generated
as pour fills mold to manufacturer’s specifications
• Regulated Density - No cutting
or trimming need to develop contour on seat - inherent
in mold itself; therefore no waste trimmings
Seat Core:
• Ply Wood - Multi Ply (Italian
sourced – no added formaldehyde), heat cured,
molded, Beech wood
Metal Frames and Bases:
• High back executive (Dyce,
Oslo, Bergen, Essex, Voss)
- Internal steel frame technology is made from 63% recycled
steel. Sa me on Voss Mesh Back frame. 100% recyclable
- Aluminum (Bases and Voss arm style) – made of
80% post consumer recycled material. 100% recyclable
Steel – recycled content based
on percentages from American Iron and Steel Institute.
Aluminum – recycled content based
on The Aluminum Association Inc.
Plastic:
• Shrouds, back shells, seat trims (task) - Made
from 28% recycled material. 100% recyclable
